Topic 5 & 6 Flashcards
What is motivational interviewing?
What is it used for?
deliberately non-confrontational
‘What are some of the good things about your present behaviour?’
‘What are the not-so-good things about your present behaviour?’
Express empathy
avoid argument or blame
roll with resistance rather than opposing it
intervention/encouraging health behaviour change
What kind is a problem solving approach and method?
Problem-focused counselling
1 - problem exploration & clarification
2 - goal setting
3 - facilitate action
e.g. smoking. How to cope with cues. avoidant strategies, coping strategies
Does implementing plans and intentions help?
yes, planning has been identified as an important determinant of behaviour change. e.g. write plan to eat more veggies, weight loss etc.
Problem-focused and planning-based interventions can help individuals to develop strategies of change; however, achieving change can be difficult if one lacks the skills and confidence. What do you do to get around this?
Modelling change.
observation of others performing relevant tasks;
practice of tasks in a graded programme of skills development;
active persuasion.
What is the role of cognitive therapy?
The role of cognitive therapy is to teach the individual to treat their beliefs as hypotheses and not facts, to try out alternative ways of looking at the situation and to have different responses to it based on these new ways of thinking. E.g. John & Therapists re: drinking at party to save job
What is an example of homework for cognitive strategies? positive & negative effects?
go to a party & don’t drink.
Failure may maintain or even strengthen the pre-existing beliefs.
What is Behavioural Practice?
Physically practice the behaviour you are trying to promote. E.g. go and buy a condom. important for self efficacy - once they do the behaviour they now know they’re actually capable of continuing with it…
What is the elaboration model of communication?
Two pathways to promoting behaviour change through mass media. Targeted at:
Central route - people open to change
Peripheral route - people closed to change
people are more likely to pay attention to campaigns when they’re interested.. If they are not, take the peripheral route
What are the two types of information framing in media campaigns?
Positive health message - stress positive outcomes of action
Negative health message - stress negative outcomes of failure to act
Three things an environment that encourages healthy behaviour should have?
provide cues to action – or remove cues to unhealthy behaviours;
enable health behaviours by minimising the costs and barriers associated with them;
maximise the costs of engaging in health-damaging behaviours.
