Topic 5 Flashcards
Abiotic
physical and chemical components (non living)
Biotic
determined by organisms; preditation//competition. (living)
ecosystem
self sustaining, functional unit
habitat
a place with a distinct set of conditions where an organism lives
population
a group of interbreeding individuals of the same species, living in an area
community
various populations sharing a habitat // ecosystem
abiotic factors (7)
solar energy input climate topography oxygen concentration edaphic pollution catastrophes
Biotic factors (3)
competition
grazing, preditation, disease, parasitism
mutualism
(all density dependant)
what are anthropogenic factors
abiotic or biotic factors which arise from human activity
what do adaptations do
enables a species to cope with biotic and abiotic factors in their niche
when does primary succession occur
in a newly formed habitat where there has never been a community
what is a climax community
often remains unchanged, final species of primary succession.
Depends on
climate//soil//available species
what is a dominant species
exerts overriding influence over the rest of the plant, microbe and animal species. Usually the largest/ most abundant species in the community
what is secondary succession
bare soil where an existing community has been cleared
what is deflected succession
a community that remains stable only because human activity prevents succession from running its course
many ecosystems actively managed to prevent a change or loss in biodiversity
