what is crowdwork?
it is a form of employment that involves a large number of people, who perform tasks, usually through an online platform. 2 examples of crowdwork are Amazon Mechanical Turk and Uber.
what are the advantages and disadvantages of crowdwork?
Advantages:
* the entrepreneur’s degree of control, and the resulting decrease in transaction cost
* crowdwork reduces the expenses that typically come with hiring employees under more traditional employment arrangements
* customers can receive a number of services at a much cheaper price
* it allows for flexible work arrangements for employees
Disadvantages:
* employees do not often receive employment benefits such as health insurance or paid leave
* employees income can be unstable and inconsistent as the competition can vary.
what are the 3 different contractual relationships in crowdwork?
1) contractual relationship between the crowdworker and the crowdsourcer- this relationship usually doesn’t last long (for a ride), and the contractual partners may change often.
2) contractual relationship between the crowdworker and the crowdsourcing platform
3) contractual relationship between the crowdsourcer and the crowdsourcing platform- this is likely to always be a contract for services
what are the functions of an employer?
1) Inception and Termination of the Employment Relationship
2) Receiving Labour and Its Fruits: duties owed by the employee to the employer.
3) Providing Work and Pay: the employer’s obligations toward its employees.
