Topic 5 Flashcards
What is a communicable disease
A disease which you can catch or spread
What is a non-communicable disease
A disease which you can’t catch off someone
What is the difference between aids and hiv
Hiv is the virus which causes aids
Hiv attacks white blood cells
Aids is the absence of white blood cells and the lack of immune system
Why do people catch diseases easily than others
Defects in the immune system means people catch an infectious disease easier
Severe physical ill health may lead to depression and other mental illness
What do we have to defend against disease
Skin
Civilised epithelial cells in nose = wafts mucus out of nose or into stomach
Mucus = traps pathogens - we swallow - stomach acid denatures it
Whats bacteria
Small living cells that produce toxins and reproduce vert quickly
Whats fungi and what does it do
They can produce spores and penetrate human skin
What a virus and what does it do
A virus lives and reproduces quickly inside our cells causing cell damage
What is a protist and ehat does it do
Eukaryotic Cells that can spread through vectors (like meat or mosquitos)
What are ways to protect against STIs
Condom
Not having sex
What is chlamydia , why is it bad and how to treat
Chlamydia - bacterial infection
Can result in infertility
Wear condoms , screening individual, treat people
What is hiv and why is it bad
Hiv is a viral infection which attacks white blood cells
Can result in aids
Can be reduced - wearing condoms , drug users avoid sharing needles
How does a virus grow and reproduce in the lytic pathway
The virus attaches itself to host cell
The genetic material from the virus is injected into the cell’s cytoplasm
The virus uses protiens and enzymes in the host to make lots of copies of itself
The cell splits open and releases the new viruses
How does a virus grow and reproduce in the lysogenic pathway
- The virus attaches to host cell
- The genetic material from virus is put into the nucleus
- Rhe host cell divides normally and replicates the viral genetic material . The virus remains dormant and no new viruses are made
- A trigger then causes the viral genetic material to leave the genome and enter the lytic pathway
What are some way pathogens spread
Vectors - mosquitos
Water
Air
