Topic 4 - The use of electrical energy affects society and the environment Flashcards
What is Fossil Fuels?
Created from the decomposition of prehistoric plants & animals.
What is Turbine?
Machine which utilizes the flow of a fluid. Examples: steam, water, air to rotate a shaft.
What is DC Generator?
Motor which runs in reverse.
What is AC Generator?
It is something that would not work as a motor.
What is a Nuclear Fission?
Splitting of atoms which remodels them into lighter elements which releases huge amounts of energy.
What is Geothermal Energy?
Energy from the center of the Earth.
What is a Biomass?
Organic matter, used as an energy source. Example: food, agricultural waste
What is Cogneration?
Use of waste energy from a process for another purpose. Example: heating or generating electricity.
What are Alternative Energy Sources?
Tides, Wind, Sunlight
What are some information about Tides?
- Water moving can also power turbines which run generators.
It is another way to use water to produce electricity.
What are some information about Wind?
- Moving air can spin blades of windmills and generate electricity.
- Used to capture natural energy and turn it into electricty.
What are some information about Sunlight?
- The suns energy sends electrons from 1 silicion layer to another creating a voltage.
- Photovoltare effect was first formed by Alexandre Edmond Becquerel in the year 1839.
What is a Fuel Cell?
A fuel cell generates electricity directly from a chemical reaction with a fuel. Example: hydrogen
What is a Nonrenewable resource?
Resource, that cannot be restored. Example: coal, natural gas
What is a Renewable resource?
Resource which is continually restored an therefore can be utilized or used indefinitely.
