Topic 3 - Devices and systems convert energy with varying efficiencies Flashcards
What is Chemical Energy?
Potential energy stored in chemicals.
What is Electrical Energy?
Energy transferred by movement of electrons.
What is Mechanical Energy?
Motion or potential to move. (Energy of something moving)
What is Thermal Energy?
Total kinetic energy of all particles.
What is Energy?
Ability to do work.
What is a Thermocouple?
Device which converts thermal energy to electrical energy.
What is a Electromagnet?
Coil of insulated wire which becomes a magnet when currrent flows through it.
What is Electric Fields?
Produced by electric charge.
What is Magnetic Fields?
Produced by electric charges which are in motion.
What are the 4 points of an Electrical Motor?
- Magnet - Along the outside
- Armature - Rotating shaft of the motor.
- Commutator - Broken ring which breaks and reserves flow of current.
- Brushes - Conducts electricity: Cell, battery, commutator
What is a Transformer?
Device which converts or changes electricity at one voltage into electricity at a contrasting or different votlage.
What is a Step-Up Transformer?
Increases voltage.
What is a Step-Down Transformer?
Decreases or reduces the voltage.
What is Electromagnetic Induction?
Creation of electric current in a conductor by changing or contrasting the magnetic field.
What is a Direct Curent?
Current which flows in only 1 direction.
