Topic 4 - The Oceans Flashcards
What is Salinity
The amount of salt in a liquid
What is a ocean ridge
Long undersea mountain chains that run near the center of the ocean
What are trenches
Along some margins of the sea floor, Narrow steep-sided canyons from a ocean plate pushing against a continental plate
What are Abyssal Plains
Wide open features of the deep sea, thick deposits of sediment
What is a Continental Slope
From the edge of the shelf, the part of the continental shelf that plunges deep at a steep angle to the sea floor
What are waves
Large ripples in the water caused by the motion of wind
What are Swells
Smooth Waves in the water caused by winds and storms far in the sea
What are Breakers
When the wave Collapses (Or Crashes) on the shore
What are tides
The daily rising and falling of the ocean
What are spring tides
The largest tidal movements when the sun moon and earth are in alignment
(M) - ((E)) - (S)
M: Moon
E: Earth
S: Sun
(()) Means bulging of tides
(Not to scale)
What are Neap Tides
The smallest tidal movements where the sun and moon are at right angles of each other
(M) | (E) - (S) M: Moon E: Earth S: Sun Earth is bulging Up and Down in this example (Not to scale)
Tidal Range
The diffrence between high and low tide
How are tides formed?
The movement of the pull of the moon on the ocean
What are trade winds
Winds that blow along the equator from the east
What are Westerly Winds
Toward the polar regions, Winds drive West to East (WESTerly)
