Topic 2 - Earths Frozen Water Flashcards
What is a Glacier
A moving mass of ice and snow
What is a Ice Cap
A glacier formed on a large, flat area,
What is a Ice field
A area of ice that feeds two or more glaciers
How does a glacier form?
Snow Piles Up: Lots of snow accumulates and doesn’t fully melt away.
Snow Turns to Ice: Over time, the weight of more snow presses down and turns the bottom layers into ice.
Ice Moves: The heavy ice starts to slowly move downhill, creating a glacier.
What is a Valley Glacier
A glacier that forms in a mountain range
What is a continental glacier
A huge mass of ice and snow that occurs mostly near the North and South Poles. They are thick and can bury most mountain ranges
What is Icefall
Ice fall occurs when a glacier moves over a steep cliff and the ice breaks up, Simply When Ice falls
What is a Crevvasse
A Crack in the glacier/ice
What is Pack Ice
A sheet of ice rarely more the 5 Meters thick that breaks easily. It is formed from freezing of sea water
What is a iceberg
Large chunks of ice that breaks loose from glaciers flow down and slope into the ocean
What is Glacial Erosion
As Glaciers move over land they break it up, As a glacier moves forward the marks left behind are called STRIATIONS
What are cirques
Bowl shaped basins in sides of mountains
What is a arete (Or can be called a Horn)
A ridge formed when two glaciers erode a mountain summit from several directions
What is a Moraine
A ridge formed by the glacier
What is Melt Water
Water formed by melting of snow and ice
