topic 4 motivation and performance Flashcards
Maslow’s hierarchy (low to high)
physiological, safety, affiliation, esteem, self-actualization
self-determination theory
motivation increases when the source of motivation is perceived as intrinsic rather than extrinsic. autonomy, control and impersonal.
extrinsic reasons
success, money, you do it to obtain a reward or don’t want to be confronted with a type of failure.
intrinsic reasons
development, learning, satisfaction. you want to learn because you want to develop and care about your study.
goal setting theory
we set certain goals, the more specific the goals the more motivated you will be.
social cognitive theory (Bandura)
we need to build self-efficacy this is created through performance outcomes, verbal persuasion, physiological feedback
action theory
aligns with goal setting and social cognitive theories. goal commitment is essential for goal setting
control theory
goals are important but there is a negative feedback loop which is primary source of motivation
equity theory
input vs output comparison, if you find it fair you move on. if the input output balance is in your favor people will stay silent.
justice theory
build on the equity model. looks at the procedures, do you have all the information available why certain decision is made.
affective events theory
suggests that environmental events emotionally impact individuals influencing job performance.
bheaviorism
a philosophy that emphasizes the importance of the environment in shaping behavior. argue that an employee’s behavior is a function of its consequences and that the causes of behavior are rooted in the structural features of the environment.
values
are acquired through learning and experience and can affect a person’s choices, effort, and persistence. values can influence choice, effort, and persistence beyond immediate goals to more ultimate ones.
cognition
cognition is crucial for individuals to identify and satisfy needs and choose and attain values/goals. motivation is essential for employees to achieve their goals.
