What event happened that created a thaw with the west and helped a lot?
Khrushchev visited Britain + USA in 1955 when he became the leader of the USSR
Wanted to improve living standards with ordinary soviet and Eastern European citizens
What did Khrushchev want for USSR that was different from Stalin?
Khrushchev wanted to make peace with USA
He created a thaw in Cold War tension for a period of time
What only partially thawed the tension?
Khrushchev planned to reduce the expenditure of money on arms.
Did not allow satillite states to de-Stalinize as much as he still needed some protection. He was worried he was going to loose his buffer against Western Europe
What is a satillite state or buffer country?
A country that is used as protection against the west. Stalin created these and used them to his advantage.
What didn’t thaw the Cold War tension?
When in 1955 west Germany was admitted to NATO in retaliation Khrushchev set up the Warsaw Pact.
After the Warsaw Pact the USSR cancelled its wartime alliances with Britain and France
What did spying on each other show?
It showed a lack of trust and that is why the relationships between the two countries were broken.
