Topic 4 Heat and Temperature Flashcards
What type of energy is heat
Thermal Energy
In what direction does heat travel - from hot to cold OR from cold to hot
From hot to cold
What is temperature
Measurement of how hot or cold something is
What is the piece of equipment used to measure temperature
thermometer
What is temperature normally measured in
Degree Celsius (oC)
What are the three ways heat can be transferred
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
What type of substance does heat travel by conduction
Heat travels in a solid by conduction
What is an example of a good conductor of heat
Metals are good conductors
As the solid is heated up what happens to the particles in the solid
They vibrate more and pass the heat energy from one particle to the next - this is how heat is conducted from hot to cold region of the solid
What is expansion
This happens when a solid is heated - the particles move further apart and the object gets bigger or expands
What is the opposite of expansion
Contraction
What is convection
How heat travels in a liquid or gas
What happens when a liquid or gas is heated
The particles gain kinetic energy and move further apart - they become less dense and rise upwards
Cold gas or liquid which is more dense sinks and replaces these particles
This creates a convection current
What is radiation
Radiation is heat transfer that does NOT require particles moving
What is a good radiator of heat
A black surface
