Topic 4- eq 2 Flashcards
What is the difference between concordant and discordant rock type?
Discordant: resistant sandstone and soft limestone
Concordant: resistant limestone and weaker sandstones and clays
What landform can you find at a discordant coastline?
Headland and bay coastline form
What landform can you find at a concordant coastline?
Coves will form is water eroded through resistant limestone and starts to erode sands and clays.
What affect does wind have on waves?
If the wind is stronger and going at a faster speed than the wave would typically be stronger and much faster. Strong winds cause destructive waves that are more common in the winter.
What affect does the fetch have on the wave?
If the fetch is larger than the wave has more time to gather speed and power.
Where are waves strongest in the uk?
Waves are strongest on the west coast of the uk/Ireland, especially during winter times. This is because the fetch from the Atlantic to the west coast is very large and wind speeds are usually faster on the west coast.
What are destructive waves?
These waves plunge downwards and have a stronger backwash than swash. This means that sediments are removed from the beach.
What are constructive waves?
These waves surge forwards and have a stronger saws than backwash. This means that sediments are deposited on the beach.
What are faults?
Faults are large cracks inside a rock that were made by passed tectonic movements.
What are joints in rocks?
Joints are small cracks found in rocks.
