Q

What are the three main rock types?

A

Igneous: old and resistant rocks made by molten lava.
Sedimentary: rocks formed by layers of sediments.
Metamorphic: a rock that has been heated and pressured to form a more hard rock.

Q

What is freeze thaw weathering?

A

First water makes its way into the cracks of the rock. At the weather becomes cold overnight the water freezes and expands. The cracks then enlarge and the process repeats until pieces of the rock eventually break off.

Q

What is distinctive about upland areas?

A

Upland areas have large and steep U shaped valleys, mountains and misfit streams. Many areas are made by old igneous and metamorphic rock that were formed years ago because of the high volcanic activity.

Q

What is distinctive about the lowlands?

A

The lowlands is mainly soft land formed by sedimentary rocks and different clays. Unlike the highlands, the lowlands has lots of rolling hills rather than steep ridged mountains.

Q

How can human actions change the landscape?

A

Human processes like farming and deforestation can harm the landscape and habitats for certain animals and plants. Farming can harm the land by eventually making it infertile.

Q

How have glaciers shaped the land?

A

Glaciers have shaped the land in the north by eroding land to create U shaped valleys and places like the Lake District. As the ice melted it created small ponds and lakes at the bottom of the valley.

Q

What is soil creeping?

A

Soil creeping occurs when water runs down the hillside when the ground is saturated. This leads to soil being pulled off the surface therefore folding over the surface. This usually happens as a result of the lack of forestry.
