Q

What is Darwin’s theory of natural selection?

A

-there is always variation between species
-organisms produce more young than will survive
-there will always be competition for limited resources
-only the best adapted will survive
-those that survive will reproduce
-their offspring will have better adapted characteristics.
(these are useful for quotes and backing up your points)

Q

What is natural selection?

A

via random mutations, some individuals are better at coping with change than others and therefore survive and pass on their better adapted variations onto their offspring.

Q

What is selective breeding?

A

When farmers select characteristics of individual animals and try to maximise that characteristic in the rest of the population through breeding the best plants/animals

Q

Why do farmers selectively breed?

A
  • to increase yield (higher value & and more)
  • increased health and comfort of animals
  • disease resistance
  • aesthetics

Q

What are the disadvantages of selective breeding?

A
  • some bad genetic diseases are accidentally passed on to the rest of the population
  • controversial-changes a specie/religious
  • Increased chance of inter-breading(inbred) therefore increased chance of genetic diseases
  • can make animals less comfortable-pugs

Q

what are the advantages of the human genome project?

A

1) Improved genetic testing
2) Location of genes that might be linked to increased chances of inheriting a disease
3) New gene therapy treatments
4) New knowledge of how humans have evolved
5) Personalised medicines

Q

What are the aims of the human genome project?

A

1) To work out the order or sequence of all the three billion base pairs in the human genome
2) To identify all the genes
3) To develop faster methods for sequencing DNA
