Topic 4 - Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is energy used for in the body?
Growth, repair, movement, reproduction
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O —-> C6H12O6 + 6O2
carbon dioxide + water —-> glucose + oxygen
What are 4 ways plants use glucose?
1.respiration
2.polymerisation(making starch or cellulose)
3.synthesis(making proteins)
4.to produce fats or oils for storage.
What 3 factors affect the rate of photosynthesis
light, temperature and CO2
What is hydroponics?
The science of growing plants without soil, by feeding them with nutrients dissolved in water.
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —-> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
and + maybe energy, depending on how you feel….
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of O2 needed to remove lactic acid after intense excercise.
What is lactic acid converted back into in the liver?
Glucose
What is metabolism?
All the chemical reactions occuring inside an organism in order to maintain life.
What does anabolic mean?
Building larger molecules
What does catabolic mean
breaking larger molecules into smaller ones
How do we investigate the effect of light intensity on photosynthesis?
- Fill a boiling tube with 0.2% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution
- Place pondweed into boiling tube with cut end on top
- set up an LED lamp at a distance of 10 cm, and leave for 5 mins
- Start the stopwatch and count the number of bubbles released in 1 minute
- Repeat twice and calculate mean
- Repeat steps 1-5 altering the distance of the lamp each time.
Why is too much sunlight bad for plants?
- saturation of the active sites in the enzymes
- bleaching of chlorophyll
How do you work out light intensity?
light intensity = 1/distance^2
What is the equation for fermentation?
glucose –> ethanol + carbon dioxide
