topic 4 - bioenergetics Flashcards
what is photosynthesis?
process which produces glucose for plants. it takes place is chloroplasts. it is endothermic.
equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
what is glucose used for?
respiration
making cellulose
making amino acids
how can you store glucose?
as lipids and starch
limiting factors of photosynthesis
light intensity
carbon dioxide levels
temp
greenhouses
they regulate: temp, light, carbon dioxide levels. they also make it harder for pests to attack plants.
what is respiration?
respiration is the process of transferring energy from glucose
what is aerobic respiration
it is the most efficient way to transfer energy from glucose. it is respiration which uses oxygen.
glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
what is anaerobic respiration?
it’s the incomplete breakdown of glucose making, lactic acid. anaerobic just means without oxygen. once this type of desperation has started there will be an oxygen debt which ur body will have to repay once exercise is done, recovery period.
glucose —> lactic acid
word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants
glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide
what is metabolism?
the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.
