What are the six principles of the data protection act?
Data must only be used in a fair and lawful and transparent way
Data must only be used for the specified purpose
Data should be adequate relevant and not excessive for the specified use
Data must be accurate and kept up to date
Data should not be kept longer than is necessary
Data should be kept secure and safe

A law introduced to protect intellectual property in anything someone has created e.g. novel song, piece of software

What is open source software?
Open source software is software where the code is made freely available users may legally modify the source code to create on spinoff software.
Advantages of open source software
Usually free
Made for the greater good
Adapted by user to fit the needs
And creates a large community
Disadvantages of open source
No warranty
No customer support
Small projects may not get regularly updated
Not as much funding
What is proprietary software?
Closed source software so the code cannot be taken and modified to make own spin-off and is owned by the company or person
Advantages of closed software
Well funded so good quality
Comes with warranty and custom support
Disadvantages of closed software
Not free
Software may not be personal
