Topic 3.9 Monoclonal antibodies Flashcards
What are monoclonal antibodies
Antibodies made from a single type of cell
What are antibodies
Small proteins produced by b-lymphocytes and bind to antigens to destroy foreign material in our bodies
What is the first stage in creating monoclonal antibodies
inject an animal (mouse) with the chosen antigen that we want our antibodies to bind to and let the animal have an immune response
what is the next stages after injecting the mouse
collect the b-lymphocytes and combine them with a fast dividing tumour cell to create a hybrodima
How do you produce monoclonal anitbodies once you have the hybrodima
let the hyprodima cells divide in a petri dish, then collect and purify the monoclonal antibodies they produce
What do antibodies bind to
antigens with a complimentary shape
What type of cell produces antibodies
b-lymphocytes
In pregnancy tests what hormone is detected and why
hCG
only produced when a woman is pregnant
What are the benefits of pregnancy tests
cheap and effective
