Topic 3//Particle Model of Matter Flashcards
Describe arrangement in solids
- Strong forces of attraction hold particles together in fixed regular arrangement
- Dont have much energy so only vibrate in fixed position
- Particles are close together so have highest density
Describe the arrangement in liquids
- Weaker forces of attraction than solids
- Forms irregular arrangement because particles slide over each other
- More energy than solids
- Less dense than solids
Describe arrangement in gases
- Almost no forces of attraction between particles
- They have the most energy
- They are free to move around
- Low densities
What is formula for density
Density=Mass/Volume
Kg/m3 = Kg / m3
Define density
A measure of how compact a substance is
What happens if you compress an object together
The density will increase because particles become packed tightly together
What is the internal energy of a system made up of
Made up of total energy that particles have in their kinetic and potential energy store
When does a change of state occur when heating
When substance is heated enough, particles will have enough energy in their kinetic energy store to break the bonds holding them together. Also internal energy increases
When does a change of state occur when cooling
When cooling, the particles lose energy from their kinetic energy store and then form bonds. Also internal energy descreases
What is specific latent heat capacity
Energy needed to change the state of a 1 Kg substance without changing its temperature
What is specific latent heat for cooling
The energy released by a change in state
What is the formula for specific laten heat
Energy(J) = Mass(Kg) x Specific latent heat(J/Kg)
