TOPIC 1// Reduce unwanted energy/Efficiency/Energy resources/Wind solar power/ Geothermal Hydroelectrical/ Non renewable/ Bio Fuels Flashcards
What reduces Frictional force
Lubrication
What reduces energy transferred by Heating
Insulation
Examples of Insulation…
. Cavity wall insulation
.Loft insulation
.Double Glazed windows
.Drought excluders
What do cavity walls do
made up of inner and outer wall with an air gap in the middle which reduces energy transferred by conduction through walls.
What is cavity wall insulation
Where the cavity wall air gap is filled with foam which can also reduce energy transferred by convetion in wall cavity
What is loft insulation
can be laid out across loft floor and ceiling. fibreglass is often used which is a good insulator as it has pockets of trapped air which reduces energy loss by conduction and prevents convection currents being created
What is Double Glazed windows
they have an air gap between 2 sheets of glass to prevent energy transfer by conduction through windows
What is Drought excluders
placed around doors and windows which reduce energy transfer by convection
Efficiency formula
useful output / total imput
Name 3 Non - renewable resources

Geothermal
6 facts about wind turbines
- Each turbine has a generator inside it which generates electricity by turbines moving
- No pollution
- Spoil the view
- Very noisy
- Impossible to increase supply when extra demand
- Initial costs are high
5 facts about solar energy
- solar cells generate electric current from the sun
- No pollution
- In sunny countries solar power is very reliable
- You cant increase supply when extra demand
- initial costs are high
6 facts about geothermal power
- Uses energy from underground thermal energy stores
- Only possible near volcanic areas where hot rocks lie near to the surface
- Free energy that is very reliable
- Can be used to generate electricity or heat building directly
- Are not many suitable locations for power plant
- The cost of building power plant is higher compared to amount of energy produced
5 facts about Hydro-Electric power
- Requires a flooding of a valley by building a dam
- No pollution
- Valley could be flooded and possible loss of habitat
- Can provide immediate response to increased demand for electricity
- initial costs are high
