TOPIC 2//Electricity in homes/Electrical appliances/More on power/National grid Flashcards
What are the 2 types of electricity supplies
Alternating current
Direct current
What happens in AC Supplies
the current is constantly changing directions
How are alternating currents produced
by alternating potential difference in which the positive and negative end keep alternating
What is the UK Mains supply in an ac supply around
230V
What is a DC
A current that is always flowing in the same direction and is created by a direct potential difference
What are the three wires in a cable called and their colors
Live Wire - Brown
Earth wire - Green & Yellow
Neutral wire - Blue
What does the live wire do
Provides the alternating potential difference from mains supply
What does Earth wire do
For protecting the wiring and for safety and stops the appliance casing from becoming live
What does Neutral wire do
Completes the circuit
What happens when you touch the live wire
your body is at 0V so if you touch live wire, a large potential difference is produced across your body and a current flows through you and causes large electric shock
What links Time, Energy transferred and Power
E=PT
What links Potential difference, Charge and Energy transferred
E=QV
What links Potential difference, Current and Power
P=VI
What links Power, Current and Resistance
P=IIR
What is the national grid
Electricity is distributed through national grid which covers the UK and connects power stations to consumers
