Topic 3 - Lesson 2 Flashcards
Compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
They both:
1. Contain DNA
2. Have ribosomes
3. Have cytoplasm
4. Have a cell membrane
Contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
Eukaryotic cells are more complex, larger, have a nucleus, membrane bound organelles
Prokaryotic Cells are less complex, smaller, do not have a nucleus and do not have membrane bound organelles
Cytoplasm
It is the site of chemical reactions, it contains ribosomes and has no membrane bound organelles
Flagellum
It rotates for movement and isn’t always present
Nucleoid
There is no membrane bound nucleus and no protein histones, there is DNA free floating in cytoplasm (circular DNA -one long coiled strand)
Plasma Membrane
It has a phospholipid bilayer and it composed of phospholipids and proteins
Cell Wall
It supports the cell and prevents the changing shape of the cell it is made of peptidoglycan(murine), murine is a glycoprotein
Pili
It allows adherence and the transfer of genetic material between prokaryotes
