Topic 3 - Infection And Response Flashcards
What is a pathogen?
A microbe that has entered the body and could cause disease
What is bacteria?
A very small cell which can reproduce rapidly. They make you ill by producing toxins that damage cells and tissue
What is a virus?
They are TINY cells that find a home inside your cells, reproduce in there until it explodes and release the new viruses. Cell damage makes you feel ill
What is fungi?
They can penetrate skin and can cause disease by spreading across cells
Name the 3 ways pathogens can spread
Water, air, direct contact
What is measles?
A viral disease spread through droplets from coughs and sneezes. Person develops red skin rash and high fever. Can be fatal, people are vaccinated for this
What is tobacco mosaic virus?
Infects plants and causes a mosaic pattern on the leaves and discolouration meaning photosynthesis isn’t working properly

What is rose black spots?
A fungal disease that causes rose plants to get black dots all over them
What is malaria?
Carried in mosquitos, which are the vector. They bite and spread the disease
4 ways to reduce/prevent spread of disease?
Being hygienic, destroying vectors, isolating infected people, vaccination
3 human defence systems?
Skin
Hair - nose and trachea
Mucus - nose and trachea
What is a phagocyte white blood cell?
Engulfs the pathogen
