This is when individuals, groups, media and governments commit themselves to making a difference to the lives of others and have a genuine concern for the welfare of others in society.
They want to change the society for the better and bring about social justice and social equality for all

A

Everyone should have equal opportunities in life, including access to education, leisure, facilities, housing and work and no-one should be excluded from any aspect of social life.

What is the social responsibility of governments ?

A

A democratically elected government has a social responsibility to make decisions in the interest of the common good of the population and elected politicians such as MLAs are accountable to the public for their actions. The government must :
- Ensure peoples human rights are safeguarded
- Promote inclusion and uphold the rights of minorities
- Uphold laws
- Ensure health and wellbeing of citizens e.g. through the NHS
- Ensure the education of citizens e.g. through free education services
- Support democracy
- Protect the environment
- Support the economy

What is the social responsibility of public representatives in supporting democracy, social justice, social equality and human rights ?

A

Public representatives include people in various leadership positions in government agaenor bodies. They must ensure the services they provide meet the public need and provide value for money as they are paid for by taxpayers. They have a social responsibility in the same way as elected politicians
Examples include : Education Authority, CCEA, Social Security Agencies and the Prison Service

A

Media broadcast and publications provide information, but from the viewpoint of those who own or control the different media companies. This means that the media can influence the views, attitudes and behaviours of politicians in parliament and the general public. To be socially responsible the media should :
- Provide accurate unbiased information
- Raise public awareness of social injustice and inequality, human rights abuses and acts against democracy
- Challenge government/politicians on their policies and actions
- Avoid using inflammatory language which would lead to public disorder

A

Social injustice is the unfair treatment of a group of people within a society. This happens when a societys resources and benefits are not distributed fairly among its citizens. These benefits include human rights, healthcare and education. Some groups may be disadvantaged or suffer discrimination and marginalisation
