Topic 3-Energy stores and transfers Flashcards
Is straw or brick a better insulator?
Straw is 10 times better than brick.
What 3 ways can energy be transferred by heating?
Conduction, convection and radiation.
What is conduction?
Vibrations are passed on between particles in a solid.
What is convection?
Part of a fluid is warmer than the rest rises and creates a convection current.
What is radiation?
The only way in which energy can be transferred through a vacuum. Infrared radiation can aslo pass through gasses and some solids.
What is a cavity?
Gap inbetween two brick walls to help insulate a house.
What is an example of a high tech product linked to insulation?
A vacuum flask.
What is the triangle linking GPE, mass, GFS and height?
What is a renewable energy resource?
It can be made at the same rate it is used(infinite).
What is a nonrenewable energy resource?
Forms at a rate that is much slower than at which it is consumed.
What are some examples of nonrenewable energy resources?
Nuclear energy, fossil fuels such as oil coal and natural gass.
Why is nuclear energy not the future?
It may not emit any carbon dioxide or other gasses but the waste it produces is radioactive and can stay radioactive for millions of years. This is very expesnsive to dispose safely.
What are some examples of renewable energy resources?
Solar energy, wind turbines, tidal power, hydroelectricity, biofuels.
Negatives of solar energy.
Not available all the time and some countries barely get any sunlight.
Negatives of hydroelectricity.
Extremely expensive.
