Q

Core Practical: Investigate the change in pH

A
  1. Measure dilute HCl into a conical flask using a pipette
  2. Add calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide and swirl until reaction completion
  3. Record solution pH
  4. For litmus paper, use a glass rod to extract a sample
  5. Repeat with varying spatula amounts (1-10) of solid and consistent HCl volume.

15
Q

Chemical test for hydrogen

A
  • Burning splint held at the open end of a test tube of gas. If hydrogen, ‘pop’ noise occurs
16
Q

Chemical test for carbon dioxide

A
  • Add gas to limewater. If carbon dioxide, liquid turns cloudy, milky
17
Q

Neutralisation

A
  • Reaction between an acid and a base
18
Q

How does neutralisation work

A
  • H+ in acid react with OH- in alkali, forming water
