6.3. Group 0 Flashcards
Inert meaning?
Chemically inactive (no reactions)
What makes noble gases chemically inert?
Full outer shell means no reactivity
What is the lowest dense noble gas and how is it used and why
Helium used in balloons and airships since it is much less dense than air, so balloons filled with it float upwards.
What are the most inert and non-flammable noble gases and how are they used and why?
Argon, krypton and xenon are used inside light bulbs,
stops the filament burning away
Why is argon used as a shield gas during welding?
It is denser than air which keeps it away from the metal
What is the pattern of physical properties in noble gases when going down the group
As you go down the group, the boiling point, relative atomic mass and density all increases
