Aggression
Any behavior directed toward another individual that is carried out with the immediate intent to cause harm.
In addition, the perpetrator must believe that the behavior will harm the target, and that the target is motivated to avoid the behavior
Media & Aggression
Short term effects: -Primes agressive cognitions -Increases arousal -Increases anger Long term effects: -Teaches people how to agress -People develop aggressive schemas -They become desensitized to violenze
Sexuality & Aggression
The Two terms are linked in several ways.
- Psychonalaytic instincts - Fighting for the female/opportunity of sex - Threats with sexual content - Entering personal space - Sexual arousal and aggression
Aggressive behavior
Any and every activity by which a person seeks to inflict bodily damage or physical pain upon a person who is motivated to avoid such infliction
Hostile behavior
Any and every activity by which a person seeks to inflict harm other than bodily damage and physical pain upon a person who is motivated to avoid such infliction
Threat of aggression or threat of hostility
Any and every communicative activity conveying a person’s intention to behave in an aggressive or hostile manner toward a person either dependent on certain conditions or unconditionally
Expressive behavior
Any and every activity resembling aggressive or hostile behavior but by which a person does not seek to inflict injury or harm upon another person.
May or may not be associated with a state of anger or annoyance

Most widely used self report measure of trait aggression Consists of 4 subtraits: -Physical -Verbal -Anger -Hostility
Reducing aggression
- Withdrawing the aggression
- -> passive, submissive behavior
- Showing the key stimulus of behavior which is incompatable with aggression
- -> Offering food, sex, humour

Active expression of aggressive behavior

Passive agression
Passive expression of aggressive behavior. Characterized by a lack of active responding
