Topic 3: Acids and Bases Flashcards
What is does a universal indicator do?
A chemical used to determine the pH of a substance
State the expected colour change and pH range if universal indicator is added to the following substances: acids, alkali, neutral
Acid- red/orange, 0-6
Alkali- blue/purple, 8-14
Neutral- green, 7
Determine the solubility of these different compounds: potassium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, lead (II) nitrate, copper (II) oxide
*have to use the data booklet for this question!
- very soluble 2. insoluble
- very soluble 4. insoluble
State the effect that these different oxides have on the pH of the water once they are added: non-metal oxide, soluble metal oxide, insoluble metal oxide
- decreases, turns acidic
- increases, turns alkali
- increases, turns alkali
Give an example of how wcid can negatively impact your health
Drinking too much fizzy drinks can cause acid tooth decay
What is the name given when a reaction of an acid with a base, results in the pH moving towards 7
Neutralisation
Name the three types of bases:
Metal oxide
Metal hydroxide
Metal carbonate
State the general equation of an acid reacting with a base
Acid + base > salt + water
cannot put question 9 of unit 3 acids and bases in here. look up/study lesson 5 pg 13 naming salts
