Topic 3 Flashcards
What does a single nucleotide of RNA consist of?
phosphate, ribose sugar & a base
Name 2 differences between mRNA and DNA.
in mRNA uracil replaces thymine, also mRNA only has 1 strand.
What is the function of messenger RNA (mRNA)?
carries the genetic code from DNA in the nucleus to a ribosome.
What is the function of ribosomal RNA (rRNA)?
The rRNA and proteins form the ribosome
What is the function of transfer RNA (tRNA)?
each tRNA carries a specific amino acid to a ribsome
What is transcription?
Copying of the DNA code onto the mRNA
What is translation?
Converting the info given on the mRNA into a sequence of amino acids
What is a codon?
A triplet of bases on mRNA
What is a anticodon?
A triplet of bases on tRNA
What is a triplet?
a sequence of bases specifing one amino acid
What are the differences between tRNA and mRNA?
tRNA is folded, mRNA is not, tRNA has base pairing mRNA hasnt, mRNA is single-stranded tRNA is double stranded.
Where does transcription take place?
in the nucleus
Where does translation take place?
at the ribosome
