Topic 3 Flashcards
What is complete combustion?
Complete combustion occurs when all the hydrocarbons are oxidised and the only product left is carbon dioxide and water
Complete combustion only happen when lots of oxygen is present
What in incomplete combustion?
Incomplete combustion occurs when their is not enough oxygen for all the reactants to oxide in this case is forms
- Carbon Dioxide
- Carbon Monoxide
- Carbon
- Water
What properties should a good fuel have?
- Burn easily
- Shouldn’t produce ash or smoke
- Should release a lot of heat energy
- Should be easy to store and transport
What are alkanes?
They are saturated hydrocarbons. This means that all the bonds joining them are single bonds
What are alkenes?
They are unsaturated hydrocarbons and have at least one double bond
What is the bromine test?
The bromine test is used to find out if a liquid contains a double bond. Bromine is an orange liquid but becomes colourless when mixed with unsaturated molecules
What is cracking?
Cracking the process of breaking down long chains of alkanes into shorter more useful chains
What are some properties and uses of poly(ethene)
Flexible, cheap, good electrical insulator
Plastic bags, Bottles and clingfilm
What are some properties and uses of poly(propene)
Flexible, shatterproof, has a high softening point
Buckets and bowls
What are some properties and uses of Poly(chloroethene) (PVC)?
Tough, cheap, long lasting electrical insulator
Window frames, gutters and pipes, wire insulation
What are some properties and uses of PTFE?
Tough, slippery, resistant to corrosion, electrical insulator
Non stick coatings, Corrosive containers, Stain proof carpets, wire insulation
