Topic 2 Flashcards
Our stomach produces hydrochloric acid. What are the uses of the acid in our stomach?
- Kill bacteria in our food
- Help digestion by allow some enzymes to work better in acidic conditions
How do antacids neutralize excess stomach acids
Antacids contain bases. Bases react with aids and neutralise them. Some bases are soluble. A base dissolved in water is called an Alkali.
Acid + base -> Salt + Water
What are the three types of compounds that can be used to neutralise acids
- Metal oxides
- Metal hydroxides
- Metal cabonates
What is the test for Chlorine?
Hold a piece of damp blue litmus paper litmus paper in the mouth of the test tube. If chlorine is present the litmus paper will go red and then become white
What is oxidation?
An element has become oxidised when it has gained oxygen
What is reduction?
An element that has lost its oxygen has been reduced.
e.g Aluminium Oxide -> Aluminium + Oxygen
What are some advantages of recycling metals
- Earth’s metal supply will last longer
- Fewer mines (Problems with mines)
- Less pollution
- Less land is needed
- Less energy
Describe one use of nitinol
It is used to keep arteries open. It is cooled and squished, when placed inside the body, the body heat makes it expand which holds the arteries open
