Topic 1 Flashcards
How was Oxygen added and Carbon Dioxide removed from the atmosphere?
Earth cools - Form oceans - Forms of life evolve in the ocean and photosynthesis begins - Oxygen builds up in the ocean and then the atmosphere
What are igneous rocks?
They are formed when magma or lava solidifies
Are made of interlocking crystals, (Resistant to corrosion)
Have small liquids if the rock cooled quickly or big crystals if the rock cooled slowly
What are sedimentary rocks
Are formed when layers if sediment are compacted over a very long time
Erode easily
are made of rounded grains and may contain fossils
include chalk, limestone which are natural forms of calcium carbonate
What are metamorphic rocks?
Metamorphic rocks are formed from existing rocks by the action of heat and/or pressure which causes new interlocking crystals to form and example of this is marble
What are some used of limestone?
Making glass
Making concrete and cement
Building stone
What are some advantages of quarrying limestone?
- Limestone is an important raw material
- Quarries provide jobs in the countryside
- Some limestone is exported to other countries which improve the countries economy
- Jobs in quarries also help local economies
What are some disadvantages of quarrying?
- Produces lots of dust and noise
- Digging destroys the habitats for wildlife
- Spoil scenery
- Lorries cause pollution and extra traffic
What are the three state symbols?
S -Solids
L - Liquids
Aq - Solutions
What is thermal decomposition?
Metal carbonates decompose when they are heated to form an oxide and carbon dioxide. Some carbonates decompose more easily than others
What is a precipitation reaction?
A precipitation reaction happens when two soluble substances react together to form a product tat is insoluble. The insoluble product is the precipitate
