Topic 2C: Data and Presenting Information: Non-Random Sampling Flashcards
What are the two methods of non-random sampling?
Quota sampling
Cluster sampling
What is quota sampling?
This is a type of sampling in which randomness is forfeited in the interests of cheapness and administrative simplicity. Investigators are told to interview all he people they meet up to a certain quota
What are advantages of quota sampling?
- Cheap and easy
- Large samples can be studied
- No sampling frame needed
- May be the only approach to use
- Yields sufficiently accurate information for market research
What are the disadvantages of quota sampling?
- Bias may exist (as first come first served basis would only attract the keenest members of the population
- Not ultimately satisfactory
- Cannot estimate sampling error
What is cluster sampling?
A non-random sampling method that involves electing one definable sub-section of the population as the sample, with the subsection taken to be a representation of the population in question
What are the advantages of cluster sampling?
No sampling frame is needed
good alternative to multistage sampling
Quick and cheap to render as only ned to go to certain locations
What are the disadvantages of cluster sampling?
Potential for considerable bias
