Topic 2a- Cell structure and Division- Eukaryotic Cells and Organelles Flashcards
What is a plant cell wall made of? What about a fungal cell?
Plant cell- cellulose
Fungal cell- chitin
What is the function of a mitochondrion?
The site of aerobic respiration, where the ATP is produced. Found in large numbers in cells that are very active and require a lot of energy.
- Also has a double membrane.
What is the function of a ribosome?
The site where proteins are made.
How does the structure of rough endoplasmic reticulum differ from that of smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
RER has ribosomes bound to it’s surface. SER doesn’t.
In multicellular organisms, what is a tissue?
Groups of specialised cells that share a common structure and function.
Two functions of plant cell vacuole.
Helps maintain pressure inside the cell/ keeps the cell rigid.
Isolates unwanted chemicals inside the cell.
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
- Covered in ribosomes
- Involved in protein synthesis
- A stack of membranes forming cavities
What is the golgi body?
- Packages secretions into vesicles
- A network of membranes forming cavities
- Modifies proteins by adding carbohydrates
What are the chloroplasts?
- Contains chlorophyll
- Site of photosynthesis
- Found only in some plant cells
What is the nucleus?
- Contains the cells genetic material
- Surrounded my envelope with pores
- Contains at least one nucleolus
What is the cell wall?
- Found in all plant cells
- Made of cellulose
- Prevents osmotic lysis
What is the plasma (cell) membrane?
- Controls transport of substances into and out of the cell
- Made of protein and phospholipid
- Found in all cells
