Topic 2a- Cell Division- Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
When a parent cell divides to produce two genetically identical daughter cells. It is needed for growth and repair.
Mitosis has 4 stages. Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase. Interphase comes before mitosis in the cell cycle.
Describe the stages.
Interphase- cell carries out normal functions, also prepares to divide.
Prophase- where chromosomes condense and centrioles separate.
Metaphase- when the chromosomes align on the metaphase plate in the middle of the cell.
Anaphase- chromosomes split and move to opposite poles of the cell. This ensures each daughter cell receives a complete set of chromosomes.
Telophase- when nuclear envelopes reform and the chromosomes unwind.
Some cancer treatments target the cell cycle.
What is G1 and the S phase?
G1- cell growth and protein production
S phase- DNA replication
