Topic 2.5 Flashcards
What is an enzyme
Enzyme: a protein that works as a catalyst. It speeds up reactions without altering itself
How does an enzyme work
A substrate will bind to an active site connected to an enzyme and the substrate will then become a product
What is the general equation for an enzyme- catalysed reaction
Substrate + Enzyme (active site) = Product
Explain enzyme substrate specficity
The shape of substrates has to match the shape of the active site. Specific enzymes are needed for specific reasons
List and explain the factors affecting enzyme activity
Temperature, concentration and pH
Describe denaturation and how it affects enzyme action
Denaturation is the change of a structure (perm). When bonds break they become denatured so the substrates can no longer fit into the active site. This slows down collisions
What are advantages of enzyme immobilization
Enzymes can be recycled
Enzymes can be removed to control the process
Increase of enzyme condensation
Increase stability of enzymes
