Topic 2.3 - Lipids Flashcards
What is a lipid’s smallest sub-unit ?
Triglycerides
What are the three types of lipids ?
Triglycerides, Phospholipids and Steroids
What is the structure of a carboxyl group ?
COOH
OH - C = O
What makes a saturated fat saturated ?
All the carbon atoms in the chain are linked to each other by single covalent bonds.
What are all the types of fatty acids ?
Unsaturated fats, saturated fats, trans unsaturated fats and cis unsaturated fats.
What are trans and cis unsaturated fats ?
Trans unsaturated fats are fats which have hydrogen atoms bonded on opposite sides of the double bond whereas cis have are on the same side.
What are lipids’ main function ?
Energy storage
How do we calculate BMI (give the formula) ?
BMI = Mass in kg / height in metres squared
Which fatty acids present health risks if overconsumed ?
Trans fats and saturated fatty acids
What are the bonds that link fatty acids together ?
Ester bonds
Give limitations for BMI
Athletic profile (muscle mass), water retention, ethnicity, heavy bones…
