Topic 2.2 Water Flashcards
What type of bonds are shared between hydrogen and oxygen to form water?
Covalent bonds (they share electrons)
Why are covalent bonds important in water?
Hydrogen and oxygen do not share electrons equally which makes water a polar molecule
What is the consequence of this sharing of electrons?
Part of the molecule has a slight positive charge and another part has a slightly negative charge making it polar.
How does the polarity of water allow it to form bonds with other polar substances?
Negatively and positively charged molecules are attracted to each other making hydrogen bonds between two polar molecules
What is the name of the property that causes hydrogen bonds to form with itself?
Cohesion (because of its polarity)
What is the name of the property that causes hydrogen bonds to form with others?
Adhesion (because of its polarity)
What’s the difference between cohesion and adhesion?
Cohesion: the forming of hydrogen bonds within other water molecules
Adhesion: the formation of hydrogen bonds with other polar molecules
