Topic 2.2 Flashcards
What is the function of memory?
storage, retention and retrieval of information
Name 3 examples of memories.
past experiences, knowledge and thoughts
When information enters the brain, what is the order of memory it will pass through?
the brain passes through sensory memory and enters shortterm memory. Information is then transferred
to long-term memory (LTM) or discarded.
How long does sensory memory last?
a few seconds
What is the function of sensory memory?
retains all of the visual or auditory input.
What is working memory?
Working memory is an extension of STM used to perform cognitive tasks.
What is the memory span of short term memory?
roughly 30 seconds
What is displacement?
the pushing out of old information by new information
What is decay?
the breakdown of ‘memory trace’ (formed when a group of neurons briefly become activated)
What two ways is memory lost from the short term memory?
displacement and decay
What method can help our short term memory?
chunking
What is chunking?
the organisation of many pieces of information into smaller chunks of information.
What method can help maintain items in our short term memory?
rehearsing.
What three methods help transfer information from the short term to the long term memory?
rehearsal, organisation and elaboration
