Topic 2.1 - Development Dynamics Flashcards
What are the different ways we can define development
Economic - The financial stability of a country
Political - the capability to look after its people and levels of corruption
Demographic - social lives of the people and general lifestyle of the people, conditions of living and job status/education status
How can we measure development?
General demographic development is measured by the HDI, which take into consideration many factors. GDP and GINI can be used to measure economic stability of a country.
How do the development indicators change as a country develops?
- Infant mortality will decrease and death/illness will decrease in general as the health care service and number of doctors per 1000 of the population increases. Also, birth rate will decrease as more women are being educated and therefore entering better jobs and do not have the time to look after more children when both partners are working in a more developed country,
What are the different demographic indicators?
Measures of inequality, access to safe drinking water, literacy rate, fertility rate, infant mortality
How does environmental factors affect inequality in developing countries?
Typography - Steepness of the land can affect the production of plants and crops etc. As well as housing and living conditions
Also, the weather is another major factor. If there is a drought, then crops will not be grown and people and the economy will suffer as farmers cannot make money or a livelihood.
How do social factors affect inequalities in developing countries?
Literacy Rate (% of population who can read and write aged 15+): If the younger population grow up without the ability to read or write it severely limits the job opportunities the future generations have, impacting the economic income of a country and keeps jobs in primary sectors.
How do Political factors affect inequalities in developing countries?
Government corruption causes problems and hinders economic development. This is because the distribution and usage of power and application of money investments will rarely be productive or fair while corruption is at play.
