Topic 2: Planetary Systems Flashcards
What’s the perihelion?
When a planet/object Is closest to sun
What’s the aphelion?
When a planet/object is furthest from sun
What’s the greatest elongation?
When a planet is the furthest point away from the sun, using earth as its reference point (search up image lol)
What’s conjunction?
When 2 events happen at the same time or you can see 2 or more objects in the sky at one like when you can see Venus and the sun - they in conjunction
What’s opposition?
When 2 objects are in opposite ends of the sky usually from Earth
What’s transit?
When a celestial object passes over another eg a solar eclipse
What’s occultation?
When a celestial body is hidden behind another object eg the sun in a total solar eclipse
What’s the equation t^2=r^3
T=orbital period R= distance from sun
When given t: Square it Cube root it = R When given R Cube it Square root it = t
