TOPIC 2: organization of the nervous system Flashcards
What are nerves?
A bundle of axons
*optic nerve= bundle not just 1 (info from eye to brain)
What are the 3 types of neurons in nervous system?
1) SENSORY neurons which carry messages from the bodys sensory receptors to the brain and spinal cord
2) MOTOR neurons which carry instructions form the CNS to the muscles (central nervous system CNS- brain and spinal cord)
3) INTERNEURONS are neurons within the brain and spinal cord that communicate internally and intervene between the sensory neurons and motor neurons
Sensory neurons - Smell and hear: FIRE!
Interneurons: Stay in? get out to be safe?
Look at notes for Nervous system structure
OKAYYY
Afferent pathways
go from sensory receptors to central nervous system (sensory neurons)
Efferent pathways
go from central nervous system to muscles and glands (motor neurons)
Somatic division
Controls skeletal muscles
Autonomic Division
Controls muscles into internal organs and glands -breathe quicker, heart beats fast
Sympathetic division
expends energy when we are aroused -scared, afraid, angry
Parasympathetic
OPPOSITE OF SYMPATHETIC -stop, slow down, back to normal
Central Nervous System
Brain and spinal cord
METHODS TO EXAMINE BRAIN STRUCTURE: CAT Scan
(computerized axial tomography) x-rays shot from different angles and computer uses it for vivid structure of brain
METHODS TO EXAMINE BRAIN STRUCTURE: MRI Scan
(magnetic resonance imagery) uses magnetic fields to take pictures of the brain
METHODS TO EXAMINE BRAIN STRUCTURE: PET SCAN
(position emission tomography) look at activity in brain
METHODS TO EXAMINE BRAIN STRUCTURE: fMRI Scan
(functional magnetic resonance imaging) structure and function of brain. Different shots of MRI Over time
