Topic 2, Mixing and Dissolving Flashcards
What is a Mixture?
- A substance that contains two or more pure substances.
Homogenous and Heterogenous, What are they?
- Homogenous- Mixture that looks like they only have one set of properties (pure substance). EX, paint.
- Heterogeneous- Mixtures that contain two or more materials that are still visible. (e.g Stew, Cereal).
Mechanical Mixtures?
-The separate parts of a mechanical mixture are called phases. EX. When oil separates from water, you can see the separation, form the two.
Dissolving?
-Forming a solution by mixing two materials together is called dissolving.
Solutes and Solvents
-The solute is the substance that dissolves in a solvent (Sugar).
-The solvent is the substance that dissolves the solute (Water).
For example, you pour sugar (solute), into the water (solvent) and
then the sugar dissolves into the water (solvent).
What does it mean for a substance to be Soluble?
-Soluble means able to be dissolved in a particular solvent.
What is the Universal Solvent
-Water, because it can dissolve so many different materials
What is Rate of Dissolving?
-When you measure how fast a solute dissolves in a solvent.
What is Solubility?
-It refers to the mass of a solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent to form a saturated solution at a given temperature.
What is a Saturated Solution and What is an Unsaturated Solution?
Saturated- A solution in which no more solute will dissolve in a specific amount of solvent.
Unsaturated- A solution in Which more solute will dissolve in a given amount of solvent. at the same temperature.
What is Supersaturated Solution?
-A solution that contains more solute than would normally dissolve at a certain temperature is a supersaturated solution.
What is Insoluble?
-Insoluble means not able to be dissolved in a particular solvent
