Topic 2 - Ionic Compounds And Analysis Flashcards
Which groups are most likely to form ions?
1 2 6 7
What is ionic bonding?
The transfer of electrons to form positively or negatively charged atoms called ions. It is an electrostatic attraction between a metal and a non metal. The metal donates their electrons.
What type of diagram do you draw to show ionic bonding?
Dot and cross
What type of structure do ionic compounds have?
Regular lattice
Do ionic compounds have high or low melting/boiling points?
High due to the very strong bonds between ions. It takes a lot of energy to break the bonds.
When do you put -ide on the end of an ionic compound?
When it contains two elements.
When do you put -ate on the end of an ionic compound?
When it contains more than two elements on of which is oxygen.
Why do atoms give or take electrons?
Because they want full outer shells.
Why do ionic compounds have high melting points?
This is due to the very strong bonds between ions so it takes a lot of energy to break them.
Why do ionic compounds only conduct electricity when aqueous or molten ?
When they are solid they have strong bonds and are in fixed positions so electricity can’t flow through it. However when it’s molten the bonds are weaker so the ions are free to move meaning electricity can flow through.
What’s a precipitate?
An insoluble product of a precipitation reaction.
Complete the equation:
Lead nitrate + sodium chloride ->
Lead nitrate + sodium chloride -> lead chloride + sodium nitrate
What are the soluble salts?
All common sodium, potassium, and ammonium salts.
All nitrates
Sodium, potassium, ammonium carbonate.
Sodium, potassium, ammonium hydroxide
Most chlorides (not lead or sliver)
Most iodides (not lead or sliver)
Most sulphates (not lead, barium, or calcium)
What is barium sulphate used for ?
Barium Meals or enemas. It shows up on x-Rays so can be used to see any problems in your stomach or intestines.
How do you do the precipitate reaction?
Add a salt to distilled water then shake to make sure it’s dissolved. Do the same to another salt. Then add both solutions to a beaker. Then put filter paper in a funnel in a conical flask and pour the contents of the beaker onto the filter paper. wash. dry. (Filter wash dry)
