Which subatomic particles in the nucleus of an atom?
Protons
Neutrons
What are the subatomic particles in an atom?
Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
What is the relative mass of protons?
1
What is the relative mass of electrons?
1/2000
What is the relative mass of neutrons?
1
What is the charge of a proton?
Positive
+1
What is the charge of a neutron?
Neutral
0
What does the atomic mass of an element tell you?
Total number of protons and neutrons.
What is the charge of an electron?
Negative
-1
What does the atomic number of an element tell you?
How many protons there are.
How do you work out how many electrons there are?
Same number of electrons and protons
What are the rings outside the nucleus of an atom called?
Shells
How many electrons can fit on the 1st shell?
2
How many electrons can fit on the rest of the shells?
8
What does the period and group of an element tell us?
Period = Number of shells. Group = number of electrons on outer shell.
How many types of atoms do elements contain?
1
What is electronic figuration?
The number of electrons on each shell. e.g 2.8.2
How do you find out the number of neutrons in an atom?
Atomic mass - atomic number
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are different atomic forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
How do you work out relative atomic mass (RAM)?
100
Who is Mendeleev?
The man that made the periodic table.
How did Mendeleev create the periodic table?
He had 63 elements. He arranged them in atomic mass order. He put elements into groups that had similar chemical and physical properties. Mendeleev sometimes broke his rule of atomic mass order if an element had different chemical and physical properties. He also made predictions about elements yet to be discovered, they have since been found proving the success of his ideas/table.
