• The Spanish clergy suffered greatly; in Barbastro in Aragon, more than 80% of the clergy were killed
• In Catalonia, leading industrialists were targeted as well as landowners in rural Aragon who were killed
• Paracuellos massacre (late 1936); Republican troops and militiamen transported 3000 political prisoners to a town outside of Madrid, they were executed and burned in mass graves

• When Nationalists took over an area, bodies of victims were left on the street to terrorise the locals
• Bodies were burnt or buried without funerals
• In Pamplona, there were mass executions deliberately planned on the annual feast of the virgin Mary; done to show Catholic commitment
