• Extreme left - anarchists, emphasised; guerilla tactics, civillian militia units, revolution and mobilising the international w/c to fight in Spain
• More moderate opinion - communists and socialists, emphasised; coventional warfare, a disciplined and organised regular army with a hierarchy of command

The differences of approach among the Republican factions erupted into open conflict in Barcelona - May 1937
- Militia made up of anarchists and socialists of the far left, fought against militiamen from moderate left - wing and communist groups
- Extremists were defeated which became known as the May days
