topic 2 - family diversity - LIVING APART TOGETHER. Flashcards
what did DUNCAN AND PHILLIPS find about ‘living apart together’?
research by P + D British social attitudes survey found that 1 in 10 adults are living apart together (LAT) in a relationship not married or cohabiting
why is decline in stigma a reason for LAT?
isn’t stigma attached to LAT now socially acceptable, majority believe ‘a couple don’t need to live together to have a strong relationship’
why is CPOW a reason LAT?
women now financially independent and can often afford to live alone due too many societal changes as LIBERAL FEMINISM - ‘march of progress’ women breaking through glass ceiling, getting top jobs, therefore will be financially independent.
how has limited finances a reason for LAT?
couple may not be financially stable to live together e.g cannot afford a mortgage
what’s is a evaluation for LAT altogether?
however a minority actively choose to live apart, for e.g. wanted to keep their own home, because of cost of living crisis may not make sense anymore.
DUNCAN AND PHILLIPS - conclude while being a LAT no longer seen as abnormal, probably doesn’t amount to rejection of traditional relationships.
