what is trend of children being born outside of marriage
47% of children born outside marriage - over twice as many as in 1986, nearly all births are registered by both parents - most parents are cohabiting
what is the trend with women having children?
women having children LATER from 1971 average age at birth of their 1st child rose by more than 4 yrs to 28.1
women are having FEWER children 20th century, no increased slightly in early 21st century , average no of children per woman from a peak of 2.95 1964 to record low of 1.63 in 2001.
women remaining CHILDLESS predicted that a quarter of those born in 1973 will be child’s reach age of 45
what is the explanation for the above trends?
decline in sigma - more socially acceptable to have children later in life and outside of marriage - only 1/3 of 18 - 24 yr olds think marriage should happen before parenthood.
changing position of women - more options e.g focusing on career before starting a family or having children, seeking to establish themselves in a career before staring a family
